PROFILE

Welcome to Richard Newman Landscape Photographer. I hope you will enjoy some of my photographs you are about to see, or have seen. Feedback would be appreciated.

I am from a family of photographers; my father was a professional industrial photographer, while my brother was an internationally renowned nature and landscape photographer based in Scotland. Against this family backdrop, my enjoyment for landscape photography didn’t develop until much later in life when I had more time to indulge.  And that’s it with landscape photography - it’s all about having the time to indulge, as it certainly isn’t a family or social pastime. Having said that it’s good to meet like-minded photographers and chat, waiting for that light to improve. When I am asked why I get up at such early hours or sacrifice sleep to photograph the Milky Way, my stock response is always the same “well, it isn’t going to come to me”. I find you must have abundance of the three ‘Ps’- patience, persistence and perseverance - touched with the occasional streak of luck that you make for yourself. What drives me, and I am sure this is the same for most other photographers, is the belief that there is still better to come.

Being allowed to roam the remote and rugged mountains of South Wales from quite a young age, my love for nature and bird life developed. Sometimes I don’t know whether to grab the camera or binoculars first.  Wonderfully rugged and remote landscapes have always greatly appealed, while I am often mesmerized by the contortion of clouds and their wonderful colours and moods.

I attempt to capture the scene as best I can in-camera, rather than trying to make adjustments in post processing. I take these photographs for myself, and I don’t feel that’s selfish, but I hope that the viewer feels if they were standing alongside me as I took them.

My wife considers me to be obsessive, while I prefer the description of ‘passionate’ but, if I am honest, it is probably quite a bit of both. I am essentially self-taught and early attempts were severely critiqued by my brother which, although disheartening at times, was exactly what I needed.

I am a keen (obsessive) amateur photographer; my profession is civil engineering and, in particular, all matters related to the ground. The purpose of this ‘amateur’ website site is essentially for my family, friends and other photographers to see some of my photographs that would otherwise be hidden away on some hard drive.

Should there be a photograph that really appeals and you would like a high resolution version, then my contact details are provided.
